The Federal Government is intensifying efforts to move vulnerable Nigerians from poverty towards resilience, self-reliance and sustainable prosperity, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard M. Doro, has said.

Doro spoke at a high-level side event in New York held on the sidelines of the 2026 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Key Highlights

  • Bernard Doro says federal interventions should help vulnerable Nigerians build resilience and self-reliance.
  • The minister said humanitarian assistance must go beyond immediate relief.
  • The Federal Government is implementing programmes aimed at supporting sustainable livelihoods.
  • The UNGA side event focused on poverty reduction, protection and shared prosperity.
  • Speakers called for stronger links between humanitarian assistance and long-term development.

FG Targets Sustainable Pathways Out of Poverty

The event, titled “Beyond Assistance: Reducing Poverty, Advancing Protection and Building Shared Prosperity,” focused on poverty reduction, protection for vulnerable populations and sustainable pathways out of poverty.

Doro said the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, working with relevant stakeholders, was implementing interventions to support vulnerable Nigerians and help them achieve sustainable livelihoods.

He said humanitarian interventions should go beyond immediate assistance, adding that vulnerable households also need credible pathways to resilience, self-reliance and shared prosperity.

Doro Highlights Tinubu Administration’s Poverty Reduction Efforts

Doro said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration would continue to prioritise poverty reduction and programmes aimed at improving the living conditions of vulnerable Nigerians through the ministry.

The minister said humanitarian programmes should address both immediate needs and longer-term challenges facing vulnerable households and communities.

UNGA Stakeholders Discuss Poverty Reduction

The side event was organised in partnership with Innovations for Poverty Action, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), IQS and the Learning Economy Foundation.

Contributions were also made by the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, represented by Mohamed Yahya; Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Women Affairs Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; IOM Deputy Director-General for Operations Ugochi Daniels; and other experts.

Speakers emphasised that humanitarian assistance must first save lives while also contributing to longer-term efforts that help vulnerable people and communities become self-reliant.

The discussions formed part of wider UNGA efforts to strengthen approaches to poverty reduction, humanitarian protection and inclusive development. The event had been announced in advance by the organisers and partners, including in coverage of Nigeria’s “Beyond Assistance” agenda.
