Top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova was forced to retire from her opening-round match at the Memphis Classic after collapsing on court amid sweltering 34°C conditions, handing 16-year-old compatriot Kristina Liutova a dramatic victory in her WTA Tour debut.
The world No. 19 had battled for more than three hours in a gruelling contest and was trailing 7-6(2), 4-6, 5-4 when the intense heat took its toll.
The match was briefly halted as Alexandrova attempted to recover, but she was later issued a time violation for exceeding the serve clock while struggling physically.
Moments later, the 31-year-old collapsed during a point, prompting immediate medical attention.
Although she was able to stand, Alexandrova was unable to continue and retired from the match before leaving the court in a wheelchair.

The emotional victory marked a memorable WTA debut for Liutova, who was visibly distressed by the incident and left the court in tears despite advancing to the next round.
Elsewhere on the women’s tour, veteran American Venus Williams exited the Mubadala DC Open in Washington after a straight-sets defeat to Austria’s Anastasia Potapova.
The 46-year-old, whose last singles victory came at the same tournament a year ago, fell 6-3, 6-3. Williams won 78.4 per cent of points on her first serve but struggled behind her second serve and on return, limiting her chances against the in-form Potapova.
