Political leaders, elders and stakeholders from Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency in Delta State have adopted former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Basil Ganagana, as their consensus candidate for the House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The decision was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a stakeholders’ meeting held in Bomadi.

Key Highlights:

  • Stakeholders in Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency endorsed Basil Ganagana for the House of Representatives seat in 2027.
  • The group also backed second-term bids for Bola Tinubu and Sheriff Oborevwori.
  • Stakeholders said current lawmaker Nicholas Mutu should not seek an eighth consecutive term.
  • They proposed that the Reps seat should rotate between Bomadi and Patani LGAs for fairness and inclusion.
  • Leaders pledged to maintain peaceful political engagement ahead of the 2027 elections.

The stakeholders also declared support for the second-term ambitions of President Bola Tinubu and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The communiqué was signed by retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tuesday Assayamor, Dr Tonye Timi of the South South Development Commission, alongside other leaders drawn from the two local government areas that make up the federal constituency.

According to the stakeholders, the resolution followed wide consultations focused on the political future, unity and democratic stability of the constituency ahead of the 2027 polls.

The meeting, which brought together elders, youth representatives, women groups and community leaders from Bomadi and Patani, reviewed the issue of representation and the need for fairness, equity and inclusive participation.

The communiqué acknowledged the long-standing service of the current lawmaker representing the constituency, Nicholas Mutu, who has held the seat since 1999.

However, the stakeholders resolved that, in the interest of equity and democratic balance, Mutu should not contest for an eighth consecutive term in 2027.

They noted that a transition in leadership would create room for fresh voices and broader participation in the constituency’s political process.

According to the communiqué, the stakeholders agreed that the House of Representatives seat should shift to Patani Local Government Area, which they said had not produced the federal lawmaker since 1999.

Following deliberations, the meeting unanimously endorsed Basil Ganagana as the sole consensus candidate for the 2027 election.

The stakeholders expressed confidence in Ganagana’s leadership experience, capacity and commitment to the development of the constituency.

They further proposed that future representation should rotate between Bomadi and Patani local government areas, with elected representatives serving a maximum of two terms.

The meeting also reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful political engagement and constructive dialogue.

“All advocacy within the constituency must remain peaceful and in line with democratic principles,” the stakeholders stated.

They urged political parties to ensure a transparent and credible candidate selection process ahead of the 2027 elections and appealed to leaders in the state to support calls for fairness and leadership renewal.

The communiqué added that a joint elders and stakeholders’ committee, comprising representatives from both local government areas, would be established to sustain consultations, monitor political developments and promote the agreed principles of unity, fairness and rotational representation.

The stakeholders maintained that democracy thrives when leadership opportunities are broadened and all groups within society are given a fair sense of inclusion and participation.

They expressed optimism that adherence to fairness, equity and peaceful dialogue would strengthen political stability and unity within the constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
