The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Rivers State Council will on Monday convene environmental stakeholders, media professionals, and public officials to discuss the urgent need for a comprehensive clean-up of the Niger Delta following decades of oil exploration activities.
The event marks the opening ceremony of the 2026 Correspondents’ Week and is themed: “The Imperatives of Comprehensive Clean-up of the Niger Delta Environment: The Role of the Media.”
Key Highlights:
- The Nigeria Union of Journalists will hold a stakeholders’ forum on the need for a comprehensive clean-up of the Niger Delta environment affected by decades of oil exploration.
- The event is part of the opening ceremony of the 2026 Correspondents’ Week, themed: “The Imperatives of Comprehensive Clean-up of the Niger Delta Environment: The Role of the Media.”
- Siminalayi Fubara is expected to attend as Special Guest of Honour at the programme in Port Harcourt.
- The keynote address will be delivered by Nnimmo Bassey, Executive Director of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation.
- Activities for the Correspondents’ Week will also include charity visits, a special congress, a dinner, and a thanksgiving service.
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara is to attend as the Special Guest of Honour at the programme scheduled to hold at the Royal Banquet Hall of Hotel Presidential along Aba Road in Port Harcourt.
According to a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the Chapel, Amaechi Okonkwo, and members of the Correspondents’ Week Planning Committee, Emmanuel Obe and Blessing Ibunge, the event will be chaired by Eze Felix Otuwarikpo.

The keynote address will be delivered by renowned environmental activist and Executive Director of Health of Mother Earth Foundation, Nnimmo Bassey.
Organisers said the week-long programme will also feature visits to charity homes, a special congress, a dinner event, and a thanksgiving service scheduled for Sunday.
