The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Yoruba Nollywood actress and producer, Temitope “Tope” Osoba at the age of 40.
Osoba died barely a year after she made an emotional return to acting following her battle with breast cancer, a journey she had publicly shared to encourage others facing similar health challenges.
The actress had previously revealed that she discovered a lump during a self-examination, prompting her to seek medical attention.
She subsequently underwent surgery and appealed for financial assistance to support her further treatment.
Follow-up tests later showed that the cancer had not spread, and Osoba was declared cancer-free. She eventually returned to acting in 2025, describing her recovery as a major turning point in her life.
At the time, she said she was emerging stronger and more resilient and was determined to use her experience to inspire others.
Known for her appearances in Yoruba films such as Ile Owo, Omo Iya Kan and Gucci Girls, Osoba also used her public platform to raise awareness about breast cancer and encourage people facing similar health struggles.
Her return to the screen had been celebrated by fans and colleagues, particularly because of the resilience she demonstrated throughout her cancer journey.
Her death has since sparked mourning across the Nigerian movie industry, with tributes expected from colleagues, fans and other entertainers who admired her work and advocacy.

The cause and circumstances surrounding her death had not been officially disclosed at the time of filing this report.
Osoba was reportedly born and raised in Ogun State and studied Business Education at Olabisi Onabanjo University.
Although her educational background was outside the film industry, she eventually built a career in entertainment and became a familiar face to audiences of Yoruba cinema.
Her journey into acting was reportedly facilitated by her early involvement in entertainment as a dancer and video vixen before she transitioned fully into acting.
News of Osoba’s death began circulating on Wednesday, August 5, with several of her colleagues taking to social media to express shock and grief.
Actress Foluke Daramola was among those who mourned the late actress, describing the news as devastating in an emotional post.
Other entertainers and fans also expressed disbelief at the loss of a woman who had publicly demonstrated courage during her health battle.
At 40, Osoba’s death represents another painful loss for an industry that has continued to mourn the passing of prominent performers.
She leaves behind a body of work spanning acting and film production, as well as a personal story marked by ambition, illness, resilience and an ultimately heartbreaking end.
For many who knew her work, Tope Osoba will be remembered not only for the characters she portrayed on screen, but also for the courage with which she confronted one of the most difficult chapters of her life.
