The United States on Saturday kicked off nationwide celebrations to commemorate the 250th anniversary of its independence, with concerts, fireworks displays, military events and patriotic gatherings taking place across the country despite extreme weather conditions in some areas.
Festivities are being held in major cities, including Washington, D.C., New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles, where thousands of Americans are expected to participate in events marking the historic milestone.
However, soaring temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius in parts of the East Coast have forced organisers to cancel or delay several outdoor activities, while weather forecasters have warned of possible thunderstorms and flash flooding in the coming days.
In Washington, President Donald Trump is scheduled to address supporters during a major rally on the National Mall as part of the anniversary celebrations.
Vice President JD Vance, speaking aboard the USS Kearsarge in New York Harbor, described the occasion as a celebration of 250 years of American courage, freedom and national achievement.
He praised members of the military, law enforcement officers and emergency responders before reading from the US Declaration of Independence, saying its message of liberty and equality continues to define the country’s identity.
Entertainment also forms a major part of the celebrations, with several top musicians performing at events across the country.

Artists including Christina Aguilera, Will Smith, Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Chris Stapleton, Ne-Yo and The Smashing Pumpkins are among those scheduled to headline concerts.
The anniversary has also attracted political attention, with critics accusing Trump of turning parts of the celebration into a partisan event through his separate “Freedom 250” initiative.
The president has rejected such criticism, insisting the anniversary is a celebration of American history, strength and unity.
The nationwide festivities are expected to continue throughout the day with fireworks, cultural displays, military parades and community events across the United States.
