US President Donald Trump has reignited speculation about his political future, saying he would “love to run” for a third term while acknowledging that the law presents a major obstacle to such a bid.

Trump made the comment on Tuesday while speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews after returning from the Patriot Games event in Ohio, where supporters reportedly chanted “2028” during his appearance.

“I’d love to run, but the law is very strong,” Trump said when asked about the possibility of seeking another term.

He added that supporters continue to encourage him to pursue another presidential campaign.

“Everybody wants me to do it, but the law is very strong,” the president said.

Trump has repeatedly floated the prospect of returning to the presidential ballot despite the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, which bars anyone from being elected president more than twice.

The possibility has generated debate within Republican circles, with some party members suggesting Trump may not be serious about another campaign.

Trump, however, previously told NBC News that he was “not joking” when discussing the prospect.

He further fuelled the speculation during a White House Correspondents Association dinner in late July, where he declared, “I won three times. Now, I’m going to do it again,” while wearing a red “Trump 2028” hat.

As speculation over Trump’s future continues, attention within the Republican Party has also shifted towards potential successors for the 2028 presidential race.

Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are among the leading names being discussed as possible Republican contenders.

Trump previously described Vance and Rubio as a potential “dream team” during a White House event in May, although he clarified that the remark did not constitute an endorsement of either politician.

Rubio also emerged ahead of Vance in a Republican straw poll conducted at the Western Conservative Summit in Colorado earlier this month.

He reportedly received 57 percent support from more than 500 respondents, while Vance polled at 21 percent.

Trump’s latest remarks have therefore added fresh fuel to the debate over whether he could seek another term, with the president openly expressing his desire to run while recognising the constitutional barrier facing any third-term bid.
