The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the August 15, 2026 Osun State election, Adedamola Adebayo, has withdrawn from the race and endorsed the re-election bid of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Adebayo announced his decision on Wednesday in Osogbo, just three days before voters across the state are scheduled to elect their next governor.

Following his withdrawal, the former PDP candidate called on members of the party, his supporters and political structures linked to his campaign to support Governor Adeleke in Saturday’s election.

Explaining his decision, Adebayo said it followed extensive consultations and a careful assessment of the political situation in the state.

He stressed that his decision was guided by what he described as the broader interest of Osun State, rather than personal political ambition.

“After extensive consultations and careful consideration, I have decided to endorse His Excellency, Senator Ademola Adeleke, in the August 15 gubernatorial election in Osun State,” he said.

Adebayo said he has taken full responsibility for his decision and had communicated his position to party leaders, members and other relevant stakeholders.

He acknowledged that some of his supporters might disagree with his decision, but urged them to respect different opinions, describing divergent views as part of the democratic process.

The former candidate also appealed to all political parties, candidates and their supporters to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

He urged political actors to shun violence, intimidation, hate speech and other forms of hostility before, during and after the election.

According to Adebayo, the collective interest of Osun State should take precedence over individual ambitions and partisan considerations.

“Osun State is bigger than any individual. Osun State is bigger than any political party. And Osun State is certainly bigger than any election,” he said.

He reminded political actors that while the election would eventually come and go, residents, families and communities would continue to live together after the contest.

Adebayo also expressed appreciation to those who supported his campaign, saying his decision to step down and endorse Adeleke did not diminish the relationships, experiences and lessons gained throughout his political journey.

His withdrawal and endorsement come at a crucial stage of the Osun governorship race, with voters expected to go to the polls on Saturday, August 15, to decide who will lead the state for the next term.
