Nigeria’s Super Falcons began preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on a winning note, securing a 2-1 victory over Senegal’s Teranga Lionesses in an international friendly played on Friday at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne, Ogun State.

The reigning African champions dominated large stretches of the contest and took the lead in the 32nd minute through veteran striker Asisat Oshoala, who calmly converted from the penalty spot.

The goal marked a successful return to the national team for Oshoala, making her first appearance since the 2024 WAFCON final.

Nigeria doubled their advantage before halftime when Toni Payne capped off a flowing team move with a well-taken finish in the 43rd minute.

Payne, also returning to the squad after an extended absence, showcased her quality as the Falcons maintained control of proceedings.

The hosts continued to dictate the tempo after the break, limiting Senegal’s attacking opportunities while creating chances of their own.

However, the visitors found a late breakthrough in the 86th minute to reduce the deficit and briefly raise hopes of a comeback.

Despite the late pressure, the Super Falcons held firm to claim victory in what was the first-ever meeting between the two nations at senior women’s level.

The friendly forms part of both teams’ preparations for the upcoming WAFCON tournament in Morocco, where Nigeria will be aiming to defend its continental crown.

Head coach Justine Madugu is expected to use the two-match series to fine-tune his squad ahead of the championship.

The two sides will meet again in a second friendly at the same venue on June 8.
