The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Lamido Yuguda as the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The upper legislative chamber also approved the appointment of Peggy Onwu as an independent director on the board of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).

The confirmations were made on Wednesday following the presentation and adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions.

The report was presented in plenary by the committee’s chairman, Adetokunbo Abiru, after a review of the nominees’ credentials.

Bola Tinubu had nominated Yuguda in March, urging him to serve with professionalism and a strong commitment to Nigeria’s economic stability and growth.

Yuguda brings decades of experience in finance and economic management. He previously served as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria from 2020 to 2024.

A fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a member of the CFA Institute, he began his career at the CBN in 1984.

He also worked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) between 1997 and 2001 before returning to the CBN, where he later served as Director of the Reserve Management Department until his retirement in 2016.

Yuguda’s confirmation comes amid ongoing adjustments within Nigeria’s economic management team, including recent appointments aimed at strengthening policy coordination and financial sector stability.
