Manchester United’s interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has expressed his eagerness to remain part of the club’s restructured management team once a permanent replacement for Erik ten Hag is appointed.
Van Nistelrooy kicked off his tenure with a resounding 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the League Cup on Wednesday, marking a triumphant start to the post-Ten Hag era. “I came in as an assistant to help the club, and now in this role, I’m here as long as I’m needed. In the future, I want to contribute in any capacity,” he stated during a press conference.
The former United striker, who played a crucial role in the club’s history, emphasized his commitment to supporting the club. “I’m here to help, I’m here to serve, and I will give my everything for the club alongside many others who want the best for it,” Van Nistelrooy added.
Van Nistelrooy’s first match in charge came just two days after Ten Hag’s dismissal, with United sitting 14th in the Premier League. The interim boss watched as captain Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro both scored twice, including a stunning 25-yard strike from Casemiro that sparked a wave of celebration from the new manager. “When you see these moments shared with the players and the crowd, it releases good feelings,” he said.
He expressed particular joy for Casemiro, who faced intense scrutiny following a dismal 3-0 loss to Liverpool earlier this season. “I was delighted for Casemiro; he’s been training hard and is a true example for the team. The crowd recognizes his contributions,” Van Nistelrooy commented, defending the Brazilian against the criticism he received.

The atmosphere at Old Trafford was electric, with fans chanting Van Nistelrooy’s name as he celebrated the victory. Reflecting on the days leading up to the match, he admitted it was a challenging time following Ten Hag’s departure. “It was sad to see Erik go; he brought me to the club and shared a passion for it that connected us,” he recalled.
Reports suggest that Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim is the leading candidate to take over as manager. However, he is expected to remain with his current club until after the next international break, leaving Van Nistelrooy at the helm for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Looking ahead, Manchester United will also face Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup quarter-finals, and Van Nistelrooy is determined to build on the momentum from Wednesday’s impressive victory.
