Reactions have continued to trail a controversial suggestion, asking the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, to postpone his presidential ambition until the 2031.
The debate was triggered after Nollywood actor Yul Edochie, during an episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, advised Obi to shelve his presidential ambition until 2031, arguing that his strong popularity in 2023, was not enough to secure victory at the polls.
Key Highlights:
Edochie noted that while Obi’s influence reportedly boosted awareness for several lesser-known candidates during the last elections, he ultimately finished third in the presidential race.
The remarks have since sparked intense discussions on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where Nigerians are divided over Obi’s political future and the opposition’s readiness ahead of 2027.
Some users supported Edochie’s position, arguing that Obi may have missed his strongest chance in 2023 and needs more time to build broader political structures.

Others pointed to what they described as better organization within the ruling party ahead of the next election cycle.
However, many others dismissed the advice, insisting that Obi remains a dominant opposition figure with a strong and loyal support base, particularly among young voters and urban populations.
Supporters also argued that repeated criticism of Obi reflects his continued relevance in national politics, while critics maintained that popularity alone may not translate into electoral victory in Nigeria’s complex political environment.
The conversation has further deepened divisions online, with renewed scrutiny of Obi’s recent political engagements and opposition activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
@NaijaTruths commented, “Yul is expressing what many are hesitant to say. Obi had his chance in 2023 and lost. Politics isn’t just about social media trends.”
@ObidientQueen remarked, “It’s amusing how actors suddenly become political strategists. Peter Obi remains the most beloved opposition figure in Nigeria today.”
@ArewaPulse noted, “Tinubu is already gearing up seriously for 2027 while Obi’s team is caught up in online disputes. That’s the difference.”
@LagosActivist quipped, “Yul Edochie giving advice on credibility is the real joke here.”
@CoalitionWatchNG stated, “Atiku participated in the primaries. Tinubu showed up. Obi went to dinner parties. Nigerians are paying attention.”
@VoiceOfEast asserted, “Even if Obi runs in 2031, the establishment will still be wary of him. That’s why they continue to attack him daily.”
@SodiqTade commented, “A presidential candidate cannot vanish during critical political moments and expect voters to take him seriously.”
@NaijaInsider247 pointed out, “The opposition is already fragmented before the election season has fully started. The APC will benefit from this confusion.”
As the debate continues, the “wait until 2031” suggestion has become a talking point in Nigeria’s evolving political discourse, reflecting broader uncertainty within the opposition landscape ahead of the next general election.
