Paris St-Germain has expressed full support for defender Nuno Mendes after he was targeted with racist and abusive messages on social media following PSG’s 3-1 home victory over Brest in Ligue 1. Mendes, who is Black, was subjected to online hate after a foul on Ludovic Ajorque led to a penalty that allowed Brest to take an early lead.
Despite the setback, PSG mounted a comeback with goals from Ousmane Dembele and Fabian Ruiz, securing the win. However, the victory was marred by the racist abuse aimed at Mendes. The Portuguese left-back shared a screenshot of one of the vile messages he received, prompting PSG to issue a strong statement condemning the hate.
“Paris St-Germain does not tolerate racism, anti-Semitism, or any form of discrimination,” the club said in a statement on Sunday. “The racial insults directed at Nuno Mendes are totally unacceptable. We stand firmly by Nuno and all those affected, and we are working with authorities to hold those responsible accountable.”
