Fear and uncertainty swept across several communities in Osun State on Tuesday, after suspected bandits reportedly dropped a threatening letter at a public school in Ikirun, prompting the immediate closure of schools and a rush by parents to retrieve their children.

Key Highlights:

  • Threat letter sparks panic: Suspected bandits dropped a threatening letter at a school in Ikirun, Osun State.
  • Immediate school closures: Authorities shut schools in Ikirun and nearby towns, causing parents to rush to pick up children.
  • Widespread fear: Communities affected include Obaagun, Iree, Eripa, Otan Ayegbaju, Ila-Orangun, and parts of Osogbo.
  • No attack reported yet: The threat led to tension and rumors, but no violence occurred at the time of reporting.
  • Call for vigilance: Residents and community leaders urge increased security presence to prevent potential attacks.

The development triggered widespread anxiety in Ikirun, located in Ifelodun Local Government Area, before concerns quickly spread to neighboring towns including Obaagun, Iree, Eripa, Otan Ayegbaju and Ila-Orangun, as residents feared a possible attack.

Parents, alarmed by the situation, hurried to schools to pick up their children, while students were seen leaving school premises and heading home amid growing tension.

The panic reportedly affected several educational institutions across the affected communities, including Community Second Grammar School in Obaagun, NUD School in Iree, Kidvarc School in Iree, Baptist Day School in Iree, as well as schools in Eripa, Otan-Ayegbaju and Ila-Orangun.

The fear later extended to Osogbo, the state capital, where some private schools reportedly contacted parents and guardians to collect their children as a precautionary measure.

Residents said the atmosphere in the affected towns remained tense as rumours circulated about the alleged threat, although no attack had been reported at the time of filing this report.

The incident comes amid growing security concerns in parts of Nigeria, where communities have increasingly expressed fears over kidnappings, banditry and attacks on schools and public institutions.

As of Tuesday morning, security agencies and state authorities had yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the reported threat, while anxious residents continued to monitor developments closely.

Community leaders have called for heightened vigilance and increased security presence in the affected areas to reassure residents and prevent any potential security breach.
