The Oyo State government has warned residents against spreading false security information, warning that misinformation could trigger panic and disrupt ongoing rescue operations in Ogbomoso.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Governor Seyi Makinde’s Special Adviser on Security, Abayomi Fagbenro, urged members of the public to verify security-related information before sharing it.

Key Highlights:

  • The Oyo State government warned residents against spreading false security information.
  • Officials said misinformation could cause panic and disrupt rescue operations in Ogbomoso.
  • The warning followed false rumours of an attack on Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.
  • Authorities urged residents to verify security-related information before sharing it.
  • Security agencies are still working to rescue victims abducted during recent attacks in the area.

According to him, false reports can mislead security agencies and weaken public confidence, especially as operatives intensify efforts to rescue victims abducted during the recent terrorist attack in Ogbomoso.

Fagbenro also warned against ignoring suspicious activities, describing “false negatives” as equally dangerous because they could delay security responses.

“Citizens are therefore advised to remain alert, observe, and report only what they know or have reasonably confirmed to the appropriate authorities,” he stated.

The warning follows rumours that spread on Tuesday, alleging that bandits had attacked the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, forcing the closure of the institution, claims the state government later dismissed as false.

Tension has remained high in Ogbomoso since last Friday’s attack, when gunmen invaded three schools on the outskirts of the town, killing two teachers and abducting several others.

Since then, one teacher was shot dead in the attack, while an abducted teacher has been beheaded by the kidnappers.

The kidnappers abducted seven students, 18 children, and six teachers, who are still in captivity, with security agencies continuing rescue operations.
