The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Minister of Finance, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, describing his passing as a significant loss to Nigeria.
The tribute was contained in a statement issued by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Finance, Efe Ovuakporie, on July 31, 2026.
Joining the minister in mourning the late elder statesman were the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance, Mr. Raymond Omachi; the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Mr. Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma; as well as the management and staff of the ministry.
Oyedele noted that Alhaji dedicated his life to public service, distinguishing himself through integrity, discipline, and sound judgment while making notable contributions to Nigeria’s economic management and national development.
He recalled that beyond serving as minister of finance, the late statesman also served Nigeria as high commissioner to the United Kingdom and held the traditional title of Sardaunan Sokoto, earning widespread respect across the country.

According to the minister, Alhaji’s legacy extends beyond the offices he occupied, describing him as a thoughtful leader whose wisdom, experience, and commitment to public service continue to inspire generations.
He added that the late former minister played a pivotal role in strengthening Nigeria’s public finance institutions, leaving a legacy that will endure within the Federal Ministry of Finance and the wider public service.
Oyedele extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, the governor and government of Sokoto State, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultanate Council, and the people of Sokoto State.
He prayed for Almighty Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the late Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and give his family and loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
