Osun State residents are going to the polls today, Saturday, August 15, 2026, to elect a governor in one of the most closely watched off-cycle elections in Nigeria.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is conducting the election across the 30 local government areas of the state, with 15 candidates listed to contest the governorship seat.
More than 2.3 million registered voters are eligible to participate in the election, which has generated considerable political interest because of the strength of the major contenders and its potential implications for the 2027 general elections.
The leading candidates include the incumbent Governor, Ademola Adeleke, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam.
Governor Adeleke is seeking re-election after a first term that has featured major infrastructure and social programmes.
His campaign has focused on continuity and the need to allow his administration to consolidate projects and policies introduced since taking office.
The governor’s supporters have pointed to road construction, infrastructure development, workers’ welfare, healthcare interventions, pension-related measures and other programmes as reasons voters should retain him in office.
However, the APC is seeking to unseat Governor Adeleke through its candidate, Oyebamiji, who has campaigned on economic development, job creation, poverty reduction, infrastructure and accountable governance.
The APC’s campaign is also aimed at rebuilding its political influence in Osun, a state where the party has previously controlled the government.
Najeem Salaam of the ADC has emerged as another prominent contender in the race. The former speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly is seeking to challenge the dominance of the two leading political camps by presenting his party as an alternative.
His campaign has focused on agriculture, electricity, education, youth empowerment, security, employment and workers’ welfare.
INEC said 2,339,233 registered voters are eligible to vote in the election. The electorate is spread across 30 local government areas, 332 registration areas and 3,763 polling units.
The commission has deployed the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for the election, with BVAS devices expected to be used for voter accreditation and the electronic transmission of polling-unit results.
The electoral process is being closely monitored because of concerns about vote-buying, voter intimidation, electoral violence and possible technical challenges.
Security has also been significantly heightened across the state. Security agencies are expected to protect voters, electoral officials, election materials and critical infrastructure while ensuring that political actors do not disrupt the exercise.
The election has been preceded by political tension and legal controversies, including a dispute over the Social Democratic Party’s governorship candidacy.
A court judgment recognised Salawu-Adeniyi Mustapha Olaitan as the SDP candidate, while the party challenged the decision through the appellate process.
The development added another layer of uncertainty to an already competitive election.
As voting begins, attention is now shifting to voter turnout, the conduct of accreditation, the performance of BVAS machines and the ability of security agencies to maintain order.
After voting ends, ballots will be counted at the polling units in the presence of voters, party agents and accredited observers.
Results will then be collated through the established electoral process before INEC announces the final statewide result.
The major question facing Osun voters is whether Adeleke will retain the governorship, whether Oyebamiji can deliver an APC comeback or whether Salaam and the ADC can pull off an upset.
