The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 30 new academic programmes for the Federal University, Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State, including Artificial Intelligence, data science, law and several health-related courses.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday in Dutse, by the acting Director of Public Affairs of the university, Abdullahi Yahaya.
Yahaya said the approval was contained in a letter dated September 11, 2026, with reference number NUC/AP/F33/VOL.II/15 and signed by the NUC Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar Girei.
He said the letter was addressed to the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ahmad Gumel, and granted approval for the institution to commence the approved programmes from the 2026/2027 academic session.
According to him, the commission also approved the commencement of academic activities by the university’s faculty of law and granted full-time status to the 30 programmes.

Among the newly approved undergraduate programmes are B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Information Systems and L.L.B. Common and Islamic Law.
Other approved programmes include B.Sc. Education Physics, B.Sc. Education Biology, B.Sc. Education Mathematics, B.Ed. Educational Management, Early Childhood Education and Adult Education.
The university also received approval to run health-related programmes including B.Sc. Community Health, Medical Laboratory Science, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Radiography and Optometry.
Yahaya said the NUC further approved programmes in parasitology and entomology, environmental standards, water, sanitation and hygiene, applied geology and remote sensing, as well as B.A. Education Arabic and English.
Science Laboratory Technology was also approved, with options in Biology and Biochemistry Technology.
At the postgraduate level, the university secured approval for PGD, M.Sc. and PhD programmes in areas including Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, Banking and Finance and Information Technology.
The commission also approved Master’s programmes in Banking and Finance as well as Accounting and Finance.
Reacting to the development, Gumel described the approval as an important milestone in the university’s efforts to expand its academic offerings.
He said the new programmes were selected to respond to changing educational and societal needs, particularly in technology, science education and healthcare.
“The new programmes are specifically designed to address the evolving educational needs of society as the courses focus on critical areas such as technology, science education and health-related disciplines,” Gumel said.
He added that the expansion was aimed at equipping students with relevant knowledge and skills that meet changing industry requirements and address emerging societal challenges.
“This strategic academic growth aims to equip students with relevant skills and knowledge that align with current industry demands and societal challenges, ensuring that FUD graduates are well-prepared for the workforce,” he said.
