The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has announced the death of its Bursar, Nasiru Marafa, who was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.
Marafa was said to have died on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in what the university described as a sudden and painful loss.
The development was contained in a statement signed by NOUN Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi.
The university said information available to it indicated that Marafa was shot, while travelling back from Gusau, although it did not disclose the circumstances surrounding the incident.
It also did not identify those responsible for the attack. NOUN described Marafa as a committed administrator who served the institution in various positions of responsibility during his career.

He was appointed the university’s Bursar in September 2026.
Mourning his death, the university described him as a distinguished colleague and valued member of the NOUN community.
“The entire university community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” the statement said.
The institution extended its condolences to Marafa’s family, relatives, friends and colleagues, while praying for strength for those affected by the loss.
NOUN also prayed for the repose of his soul and asked Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
The university said details concerning his burial arrangements would be announced after receiving further information from his family.
