From the Super Eagles’ World Cup qualifying push to a landmark Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) election and the ongoing NPFL season, Nigerian football news moves fast. This hub brings together the latest on the Super Eagles, the NFF election and the NPFL in one place.

Key Highlights

  • The Super Eagles beat Rwanda 1-0 in Uyo on September 6, moving to third in Group C with 10 points from seven matches.
  • Nigeria travel to Bloemfontein to face South Africa on Tuesday, September 9, in a must-win Matchday 8 qualifier.
  • NFF President Ibrahim Gusau resigned along with his Executive Committee on August 27, 2026; the Elective Congress to choose new leadership is now set for Sunday, September 27, 2026, in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
  • Deputy General Secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme is handling NFF administrative duties in an acting capacity, while FIFA has accepted the mass resignations and backed a roadmap for comprehensive reform.
  • The NPFL, Nigeria’s top-flight league, continues to be a key pipeline for talent moving into the Super Eagles set-up and across African club football.

Super Eagles News: World Cup Qualifying Campaign

Head coach Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes alive with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, September 6. Tolu Arokodare, introduced from the bench, scored the only goal of the game in the 51st minute to hand Nigeria a crucial three points.

The win moves the Super Eagles to third in Group C on 10 points from seven matches, six points behind leaders South Africa and one point behind second-placed Benin Republic. Nigeria now travel to Bloemfontein to face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on Tuesday, September 9, in a Matchday 8 fixture that could define the rest of their qualifying campaign. Victor Osimhen, William Troost-Ekong, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali remain central figures in Chelle’s squad as Nigeria push for a return to the World Cup after missing out on the 2022 edition in Qatar.

NFF Election: What’s At Stake

Nigerian football administration is in the middle of a genuine leadership crisis. President Ibrahim Musa Gusau resigned on August 27, 2026, alongside General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and most of the Executive Committee, citing the need to pave the way for u201ca comprehensive and orderly reform processu201d after the Super Eagles missed out on the 2026 World Cup qualification picture that had been feared at the time and the Super Falcons missed the 2027 Womenu2019s World Cup. Deputy General Secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme has been handling administrative duties in an acting capacity since then, President Bola Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive reform of NFF governance, and FIFA has accepted the mass resignations while backing a roadmap for comprehensive reform of Nigerian football. The Elective Congress to choose new leadership u2014 previously shifted to avoid clashing with a Super Eagles qualifier u2014 is now scheduled for Sunday, September 27, 2026, in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

Incumbent president Ibrahim Musa Gusau, who first won the NFF presidency at the 78th Elective Congress in Benin, is seeking a second term, and the race has already drawn public debate over eligibility rules and who genuinely qualifies to lead Nigerian football next. NFF elections have historically been closely contested — Gusau himself needed a runoff to see off closest rival Seyi Akinwunmi in the last cycle — and with FIFA and CAF both said to be watching this cycle closely, September 26 is shaping up as one of the most consequential dates on the Nigerian football news calendar this year.

NPFL: Nigeria’s Top-Flight League

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) remains the country’s premier domestic competition and a key proving ground for players who go on to represent the Super Eagles. Clubs such as Rivers United, Remo Stars, Enyimba, Plateau United and Enugu Rangers have anchored recent title races, with the league office continuing to strengthen its administrative structure — including the recent appointment of a substantive NPFL Chief Operating Officer by the NFF. As the new NPFL season builds up, expect regular NPFL fixtures and NPFL results coverage here as matchdays get underway.
