Nigeria’s Federal Government has launched a national digital postcode system that assigns a unique 11-character code to every addressable building in the country, as part of efforts to improve location identification for deliveries, emergency response, public services and digital commerce.
Key Highlights
- Nigeria launches an 11-character National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System.
- Each addressable building is assigned a unique digital location code.
- The system is operated by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).
- Codes are structured using state, local government area, district, area and building levels.
- Nigerians can look up their codes through the official postcode platform.
- The system is designed to support deliveries, emergency services and government operations.
- Digital postcodes are intended to complement, not replace, existing physical addresses.
Nigeria Launches National Digital Postcode System
The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System was announced by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.
The system, operated by NIPOST, is designed to provide a precise, Geographic Information System-enabled reference for locations across Nigeria.
Each digital postcode is structured across five levels covering the state, local government area, district, area and individual building.
The government said the system is intended to provide a more reliable way of identifying locations across the country.
Digital Postcodes Target Nigeria’s Addressing Challenges
Nigeria has long faced difficulties with formal address identification, particularly in communities where streets lack standard names or buildings do not have consistent numbering.
The Federal Government said the digital postcode system is designed to address some of these challenges by providing a unique digital identifier for individual buildings.
Officials said more precise location data could help logistics companies, emergency responders, government agencies and online businesses locate customers and communities more efficiently.

Nigerians Urged to Use Digital Postcodes
The government has urged Nigerians and businesses to begin using their digital postcodes when providing location information.
Citizens can look up their postcodes through the official postcode platform and share them with family members, delivery companies, businesses and other organisations that require accurate location information.
The system is expected to be particularly useful for e-commerce, logistics and other services that depend on accurate location data.
How Nigeria’s 11-Character Postcode Works
The digital postcode uses an 11-character structure designed to progressively narrow a location from a broad geographical area to a specific building.
The five levels identify the:
- State
- Local government area
- District
- Area
- Building
This structure is intended to create a consistent digital reference for locations across Nigeria.
Digital Postcode to Support Emergency Response
Beyond commercial applications, the government expects the system to support emergency response and public-service delivery.
A standard digital identifier for buildings could make it easier for emergency and government agencies to identify locations where assistance is required, particularly in areas where conventional addresses are difficult to interpret.
The system could also provide businesses and public institutions with a more consistent location reference for service delivery.
Digital Postcode Does Not Replace Physical Addresses
The government clarified that the digital postcode is not a replacement for existing physical addresses.
Instead, it is designed to operate as an additional digital location identifier alongside street names, house numbers and other conventional address information.
The system is also being positioned as part of broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and support economic activity.
Government Links Postcode System to Digital Economy
Tijani said the initiative would help make Nigerians, businesses and communities easier to locate and connect to economic opportunities.
“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” the minister said.
The government has linked the initiative to President Bola Tinubu’s broader economic ambitions, including the target of building a $1 trillion economy.
Details concerning the extent of integration with private logistics platforms and the implementation of full national coverage are expected to become clearer as the system is rolled out. For more updates on this and other stories, follow us on X.
