The North East Development Commission (NEDC), Adamawa State office, has launched the 2026 Skating Championship in Yola, as part of efforts to promote peace, unity and productive youth engagement in the state.
The championship with the theme: “Sports for Peace, Unity and Possibilities,” was launched on Saturday, at the Ribadu Square, Yola, attracting young athletes, sports officials, community members and other stakeholders from across the state.
Speaking at the launch, the Adamawa State Coordinator of the NEDC, Muhammad Lawan, said the initiative is designed to foster social cohesion, identify sporting talents and provide meaningful opportunities for young people, particularly in communities recovering from the impact of insurgency.

Lawan described sports as an effective platform for engaging youths positively and strengthening relationships among communities.
“Sports remain a powerful tool for engaging our youths productively, fostering unity and building bridges across communities.
“This championship is not just about competition and trophies. It is about peace, tolerance and giving our young people a sense of belonging and hope for the future,” he said.
The event featured the participation of sports officials, representatives of sporting associations, key stakeholders and hundreds of youths who gathered to support the competitors.
The NEDC reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining youth-focused initiatives aimed at promoting reconciliation, healthy living, talent development and community resilience.
The commission also said it would continue to collaborate with development partners and relevant stakeholders to implement programmes capable of contributing to peacebuilding and sustainable development across the state.
