The Nigerian Navy has dismantled an illegal refining site and destroyed three storage tanks discovered in Promise Land Community, along Nanabie Creek in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The operation was conducted by the Forward Operating Base (FOB) BONNY following credible intelligence that led to the discovery of the illegal refining site on September 30.

  • Nigerian Navy destroys illegal refining site in Rivers State.
  • Three storage tanks suspected to be linked to illegal crude oil refining were destroyed.
  • The operation took place in Promise Land Community, Bonny LGA.
  • The Navy also discovered a large cooking pot at the site.
  • The operation was carried out under Operation DELTA SENTINEL.
  • The Navy said the operation disrupted infrastructure allegedly used for crude oil theft and illegal refining.

The Director of Naval Information, Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, disclosed this in an operational report made available to journalists in Abuja.

According to Folorunsho, personnel of FOB BONNY discovered one large cooking pot and three large storage tanks suspected to have been intended for illegal crude oil refining activities.

He said the Commanding Officer of FOB BONNY, Capt. Stanley Umesh, subsequently led a team to the location, where the illegal refining site and associated equipment were destroyed in line with established regulations.

Folorunsho said the operation disrupted infrastructure allegedly used by criminal operators to process stolen crude oil in the area.

“The intervention represents a further disruption of illegal refining capacity within the Bonny area,” he said.

Navy Intensifies Fight Against Crude Oil Theft

The Navy spokesman said the operation was conducted under Operation DELTA SENTINEL, adding that it followed other recent operations by FOB BONNY targeting crude oil theft and illegal refining activities within its area of responsibility.

He said previous operations had also uncovered substantial quantities of suspected stolen crude oil and equipment linked to illegal refining.

Folorunsho said the Navy would continue to strengthen surveillance and monitoring across waterways and communities in the area to prevent criminals from establishing or reactivating illegal refining sites.

He added that the measures were aimed at denying criminal operators the infrastructure required to sustain crude oil theft and related activities.

The latest operation comes amid continued efforts by security agencies to curb crude oil theft, illegal refining and other activities affecting Nigeria’s oil-producing communities and petroleum sector.
