The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State has directed students to observe a peaceful sit-at-home in protest against the recent increase in school fees.
The directive, announced in a statement issued on Sunday, followed unsuccessful discussions between the union and the institution’s management over the reviewed tuition charges.
The statement was jointly signed by the Students’ Union President, Afolabi Temitope; acting Speaker, Olorode Kehinde; General Secretary, Ekundayo Gbenga; and Public Relations Officer, Oloyede Ganiyu.
According to the union, several rounds of consultations had been held with the management since the revised fees were uploaded to the students’ portal.
It maintained that the welfare of students should remain a priority in decisions affecting their education.
The union noted that despite sustained dialogue, the concerns raised by students remain unresolved, adding that the prevailing economic hardship has made it increasingly difficult for many students and parents to cope with additional financial burdens.
“As the constitutionally recognised voice of the students, we cannot ignore these concerns,” the union stated, reaffirming its commitment to peaceful advocacy and constructive engagement.
The SUG therefore directed all students to stay away from lectures and other academic activities as a demonstration of their opposition to the fee increase and a call for the authorities to review the decision.

The union stressed that the protest is strictly peaceful and should not be interpreted as an invitation to violence, vandalism, intimidation, or any act capable of disrupting the peace of the institution.
Students were urged to remain orderly, avoid confrontation with school officials and security personnel, and rely only on information released through official SUG channels.
The union also appealed to shuttle operators, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, and other transport service providers within the institution to suspend operations in solidarity with the protest.
While reaffirming its commitment to continued dialogue with the management, the SUG said the sit-at-home action does not signal the end of negotiations but is intended to draw attention to the concerns of students.
The union expressed optimism that the peaceful protest would encourage the institution’s authorities to reconsider the fee increase in the interest of students while discussions continue.
