MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving staff welfare, workplace safety, professional development and constructive engagement with organised labour as the company continues its transformation of electricity distribution operations in Enugu State.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of MainPower, Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, gave the assurance on Wednesday when he received the leadership of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Enugu State Council, during a courtesy visit to the company’s corporate headquarters at Power House, Enugu.

The NUEE delegation was led by the State Chairman, Comrade Obumneme Chime, and included the State Secretary, Comrade Njoku Uchendu, and nine other members of the council.

Welcoming the delegation, Mupwaya commended the union for the constructive tone of its engagement, particularly its emphasis on cooperation rather than confrontation. He noted that Management, employees and organised labour share a common interest in building a strong, efficient and financially sustainable electricity distribution company.

According to him, Management had taken note of the union’s concerns regarding workers’ welfare, promotion and career progression, health and safety, staffing levels, training and professional development, employee participation and recreational activities.

He assured the union that these issues would continue to receive attention through structured engagement, while stressing that sustainable improvements in employee welfare must be supported by corresponding improvements in the company’s overall performance and financial sustainability.

“We must recognise that the welfare of our employees and the sustainability of the business are closely connected. As we improve operational efficiency, customer service and revenue collection, while reducing losses, we strengthen the capacity of the company to provide better opportunities and welfare for our people,” Mupwaya said.

On health and safety, he emphasised that safety remains a shared and non-negotiable responsibility across the organisation, stressing that no operational target should take precedence over human life.

He further explained that MainPower is implementing a broad business transformation programme focused on improving electricity supply, metering, customer service, revenue performance and operational efficiency.

“Achieving these objectives requires a motivated, disciplined, properly trained and productive workforce,” he said.

Mupwaya also welcomed the union’s proposals on continuous professional development and recreational activities aimed at promoting teamwork and employee wellbeing. He assured the delegation that the relevant departments would engage with the union to assess how the initiatives could be incorporated into the company’s programmes within available resources.

Earlier, Comrade Chime said the visit was primarily aimed at establishing and strengthening a cordial relationship between the Enugu State Council of NUEE and the Management of MainPower.

He acknowledged the progress being made by the company and stressed the union’s preference for dialogue, mutual respect and constructive partnership in addressing issues affecting employees.

Both parties expressed their commitment to maintaining open communication and working together to promote staff welfare, productivity, workplace safety, industrial harmony and improved service delivery to electricity customers across Enugu State.

Mupwaya received the delegation alongside members of his management team, including the Chief Commercial Officer, Mr. Ikenna Akabogu; Chief Finance Officer, Mrs. Mercy Ogbonna; Head, Health, Safety and Environment, Dr. Francis Iwu; Head, Customer Services, Mrs. Ijeoma Ogudebe; and Head, Human Resources, Delphine Nkiru Chukwuma.
