Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso has backed the renewed police investigation into the 2019 disappearance of social media activist, Abubakar Idris Dadiyata and called for compensation for his family if the probe establishes wrongdoing.

Kwankwaso made the call while reacting to the directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, ordering a comprehensive investigation into the long-running case.

In a statement posted on his official X account, the former Kano governor said he and his political associates had consistently demanded justice and accountability since Dadiyata’s abduction in 2019.

He also urged security agencies to place officers mentioned in the fresh allegations under close watch to prevent any interference with the investigation process.

The renewed attention on the case followed a petition submitted by human rights lawyer, Abba Fagge to the police chief, seeking an independent probe into two senior police officers allegedly linked to Dadiyata’s disappearance.

According to reports, the allegations stemmed from claims made by Muhammad Kamarawa, who alleged that the officers boasted during his detention in 2021, that they had killed Dadiyata.

Kwankwaso commended the police leadership for reopening the case and expressed hope that the fresh investigation would uncover the truth and ensure justice for the missing activist.

Dadiyata, a lecturer at the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, was abducted by gunmen from his residence in Kaduna in August 2019, and has not been seen since.

He was widely known for his criticism of former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje and his support for the Kwankwasiyya political movement.

Both Ganduje and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai have repeatedly denied any involvement in the disappearance.
