The Government has confirmed the abduction of 24 persons from an orphanage facility in the state, with 15 of the victims already rescued following a swift security response.
In a statement issued on Monday, the State Commissioner for Information , disclosed that 23 of the abducted individuals were pupils, while the remaining victim was the wife of the orphanage proprietor.
According to the government, the incident occurred late on April 26, 2026, when unknown gunmen stormed the facility identified as the Dahallukitab Group of Schools located in a remote and bushy area.
Authorities revealed that the institution was operating without proper registration or the knowledge of relevant state agencies.
Fanwo described the attack as “unfortunate and avoidable,” noting that prompt intervention by security operatives led by the , alongside other agencies, resulted in the rescue of 15 victims. Efforts, he said, are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining abductees and apprehend those responsible.

He commended the security agencies for their professionalism and rapid coordination, which he said helped to limit the scale of the incident.
The state government, however, raised concerns over the proliferation of unregistered orphanages and schools operating in isolated locations, warning that such practices pose serious security risks, particularly under the current security climate.
“The operation of such facilities outside regulatory oversight not only undermines safety standards but also exposes innocent children to avoidable dangers,” Fanwo stated.
Authorities have urged operators of orphanages, schools, and similar institutions to comply with regulatory requirements and ensure proper engagement with government agencies for security assessment and protection.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the Kogi State Government assured residents that security operations remain ongoing to bring the situation fully under control and ensure the safe return of all victims.
