Kebbi Teachers to Receive ₦75,000 Minimum Wage
The NUT Chairman in Kebbi State, Comrade Abubakar Zaki, announced the development while addressing journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
Zaki said the approval followed Governor Nasir Idris’ endorsement of the White Paper on the report of a committee established to audit the teaching workforce.
According to him, the committee was tasked with determining the actual number of qualified and unqualified teachers, reviewing their salary structure and establishing the total number of teachers covered by the government’s wage policy.
Zaki said the verification exercise fixed the number of teachers covered by the new salary benchmark at 17,620.
NUT Confirms October Implementation
The NUT chairman said teachers would begin enjoying the new minimum wage from October following the government’s approval in September.
“After the verification exercise ordered by the Governor and consequent approval of the N75,000 minimum wage in September, teachers in Kebbi will start enjoying the new benchmark salary structure beginning from this month of October,” Zaki said.
The development places Kebbi teachers on the same ₦75,000 minimum wage floor as other state civil servants, according to reports on the announcement.
Governor Idris Praised Over Teachers’ Welfare
Zaki commended Governor Nasir Idris for what he described as his commitment to teachers’ welfare and the education sector.
He noted that Idris is a professional teacher and former labour leader who previously served as National President of the NUT.
The NUT chairman said the governor had demonstrated what he described as “zeal and compassion” towards improving the welfare of teachers and the teaching profession.
Kebbi Teachers’ Salary Review Follows Earlier Wage Dispute
The latest approval follows previous concerns over the implementation of the ₦75,000 minimum wage for some teachers in the state.
The state government had previously approved a ₦75,000 minimum wage for workers, while complaints later emerged over the application of the benchmark to some primary-school teachers, prompting the governor to set up a committee to probe the salary discrepancies.
The subsequent workforce audit and verification exercise was presented by the NUT as the process that established the number of teachers covered and cleared the way for implementation of the new salary structure.
Teachers’ Retirement Age Extended to 65
Zaki also highlighted other measures affecting teachers under the Nasir Idris administration.
According to him, the retirement age for teachers has been increased from 60 to 65 years, while the period of service has been extended from 35 to 40 years.
The union said the reforms were among measures previously advocated by Idris during his tenure as national president of the NUT.

Kebbi Cites Investment in School Infrastructure
The NUT also pointed to investments in education infrastructure across the state.
According to the union, 2,650 schools have been rehabilitated, while 200 new schools are being constructed to improve the teaching and learning environment.
Zaki urged teachers to respond to the improved welfare package with renewed dedication, commitment and professionalism.
NUT Clarifies Minimum Teaching Qualification
The NUT chairman further clarified that the minimum entry qualification for teaching in Kebbi remains the National Certificate in Education (NCE) or diploma.
He noted, however, that many teachers in the state hold university degrees and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs).
According to the union, career progression for teachers runs from Grade Level 07 to Grade Levels 15 and 16, depending on qualifications and career advancement.
The approval of the ₦75,000 minimum wage marks a new stage in the implementation of the salary benchmark for Kebbi teachers, with the NUT confirming that the 17,620 verified teachers are expected to benefit from the October 2026 rollout.
