The Kano State government has earmarked N1.5 billion for the sponsorship of a mass wedding involving 1,500 couples, the state Hisbah board has said.
Key Highlights:
Commandant-General of the board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, disclosed this on Monday, while briefing journalists on preparations for the planned exercise.
Daurawa said the board had received about 5,000 applications from intending couples, but only 3,000 people comprising 1,500 brides and grooms would be selected for the programme.
He explained that the initiative was targeted at supporting poor and vulnerable couples who lacked the financial capacity to establish their homes.
The Hisbah boss said the state government, under Governor Abba Yusuf, would provide each couple with beddings, food items, clothing materials, N100,000 dowry support and another N100,000 for empowerment.

He added that the government is expected to spend about N1 million on each couple as part of efforts to ensure the sustainability of the marriages.
Daurawa said the board would also ensure that intending grooms had accommodation and a means of livelihood before participating in the wedding.
He noted that all beneficiaries would undergo premarital medical screening, including genotype, pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B tests, among others.
According to him, the date for the mass wedding would be announced by Governor Yusuf after the completion of all arrangements.
The commandant-general warned against unnecessary marital breakdowns, saying couples would be required to consult the Hisbah board before proceeding with divorce after benefiting from the programme.
He advised intending couples to undergo necessary tests and seek proper guidance before courtship to prevent challenges in marriage.
