The Kano State House of Assembly has called on the state government to urgently provide relief materials and humanitarian assistance to victims of a devastating rainstorm in Bichi Local Government Area, which claimed eight lives and destroyed houses and properties worth millions of naira.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the member representing Bichi Constituency, Lawan Shehu, during  plenary presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Falgore.

Moving the motion, Shehu informed the House that the rainstorm, which occurred last Thursday, wreaked havoc across several communities in Bichi, leaving eight people dead and causing extensive destruction to residential buildings and other valuable property.

The lawmaker said he visited the affected communities alongside the chairman of Bichi Local Government to sympathise with the victims and assess the extent of the damage.

He disclosed that the member representing Bichi Federal Constituency had provided N2 million to each bereaved family, while victims who lost both relatives and property received N10 million as intervention.

Shehu, however, appealed to the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf to intervene by providing emergency relief materials and other forms of assistance to help alleviate the suffering of the affected residents.

Following deliberations, lawmakers unanimously adopted the motion and urged the state government to expedite action in delivering relief to the victims.

In a separate resolution, the House urged the state government to establish two modern skills acquisition centres in Tudun Fulani and Zango wards of Ungogo Local Government Area to equip youths with vocational and entrepreneurial skills.

Sponsor of the motion, Saad Aminu, who represents Ungogo Constituency, said the initiative has become necessary due to the growing youth population in the area and the need to tackle unemployment.

He noted that the proposal gained further significance following the recent arrest of over 20 youths suspected of involvement in kidnapping, many of whom reportedly lacked formal education.

He added that the proposed centres would also serve youths from neighbouring Minjibir, Dala and Fagge local government areas.

The House also adopted motions seeking the upgrade and installation of modern facilities at Sabon Bakin Zuwa Hospital in Jakara, Kano Municipal Local Government Area, and the rehabilitation of roads in Makoda, Dawakin Kudu and Warawa Local Government Areas.
