The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has sacked one of its staff for allegedly extorting unsuspecting candidates.

JAMB disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, saying the disciplinary action was part of its renewed efforts to rid the admission and examination system of fraud and other forms of misconduct.
The board did not disclose the identity of the affected staff member or the amount allegedly extorted from the candidates.
JAMB said the decision demonstrated that its campaign against fraudulent practices was not targeted only at individuals outside the organisation, stressing that internal misconduct would also attract severe sanctions.
“The board has terminated the appointment of one of its staff members for extorting unsuspecting candidates, in further demonstration of its renewed commitment to flushing out bad eggs from the system,” the statement said.
The board warned its employees against engaging in conduct capable of undermining its operations or exploiting candidates and members of the public.

It said staff found violating its rules would face appropriate disciplinary measures, regardless of their positions within the organisation.
JAMB said its zero-tolerance policy on corruption and misconduct applied equally to all employees.
“The board noted that the action sends a clear and unequivocal message that its zero-tolerance policy on corruption and misconduct applies to everyone, irrespective of status or position,” it added.
The examination body said it would not shield employees who abuse their positions or betray the trust placed in them by candidates and members of the public.
JAMB has in recent years intensified efforts to tackle examination fraud, impersonation, illegal admission racketeering and other practices capable of compromising the integrity of its examinations and admission processes.
The board said the latest disciplinary action was necessary to ensure that the fight against fraud begins from within the organisation.
“The board reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a clean, accountable and professional workforce, stressing that the fight against fraud and misconduct must begin from within if the integrity of its operations is to be fully preserved,” it said.
