The head of referee appointments in Italy’s top football divisions, Gianluca Rocchi, has suspended himself following an investigation into alleged sporting fraud linked to the 2024–25 season.

The development was confirmed by the Italian Referees Association (AIA), after prosecutors in Milan opened a formal probe into the 52-year-old, who serves as referee designator for Serie A and Serie B.

According to reports from Italian media, Rocchi is under investigation for alleged “complicity in sporting fraud,” a criminal offence in Italy that carries a potential prison sentence of up to six years.

A preliminary court hearing is scheduled in the coming days.

In a statement released through the AIA, Rocchi described his decision to step aside as “painful and difficult,” saying it was necessary to allow the legal process to proceed without interference.

“My great love for the association and sense of responsibility for my role lead me to protect the integrity of this important group,” he said, expressing confidence that he would “emerge unscathed and stronger” once the matter is resolved.

The investigation reportedly centres on allegations that Rocchi influenced referee appointments and match decisions.

Among the claims is that he selected a referee for a match involving Inter Milan based on perceived favourability.

Another allegation involves a video assistant referee (VAR) decision not to intervene after an incident in a separate game.

Further scrutiny surrounds a match between Udinese and Parma, where Rocchi is accused of pressuring a VAR official to prompt an on-field review for a handball incident.

The referee subsequently awarded a penalty, which proved decisive in the match.

In a related development, VAR supervisor Andrea Gervasoni has also suspended himself after being named in the investigation.

The unfolding case has raised fresh concerns about the integrity of officiating in Italian football, with authorities under pressure to ensure transparency and accountability in the sport.

Rocchi, a respected former international referee, remains a prominent figure in Italian football administration.

His temporary withdrawal marks a significant moment for the country’s refereeing structure as the investigation continues.
