The tragic death of Ibrahim Mbaya, the 25-year-old Nigerian model and chef popularly known as Ibee, has continued to dominate conversations on social media, with calls for justice growing louder as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal mob attack.

Key Highlights:

  • Model Ibrahim Mbaya died after an alleged mob attack in Jos.
  • Police arrested three suspects and launched an investigation.
  • The alleged iPhone theft claim remains unverified.
  • His death sparked outrage and calls for justice.
  • The case has renewed concerns over mob justice.

Mbaya, a contestant in the Mr. and Miss Glam Nigeria 2026 pageant and a student of the University of Jos, died after he was allegedly attacked by a mob in the Ring Road area of Jos North Local Government Area on Sunday, July 26, following accusations that he stole an iPhone.

According to the Plateau State Police Command, the young model was rushed unconscious to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), where he was confirmed dead.

Police spokesperson Alfred Alabo said officers received information at about 11:20 p.m. that some youths had brought an unconscious man to the hospital under suspicious circumstances.

The command said investigations commenced immediately, leading to the arrest of three suspects identified as Rinji Fwanji (25), Emmanuel Newyear (30), and Nensemka Fwanji (22). Police said the investigation remains ongoing and promised that everyone found culpable would face justice.

Known by many as Ibee, Mbaya was building a reputation as a model, chef and creative entrepreneur. Friends and admirers described him as ambitious and hardworking, saying he was passionate about fashion and had dreams of making a name for himself in Nigeria’s entertainment and modelling industry.

His death has left many shocked, with tributes pouring in from fellow creatives, students and supporters across social media.

As news of his death spread, social media became flooded with reactions, grief and speculation.

While many users condemned the alleged mob action, others questioned whether the accusation of phone theft alone explained the level of violence.

Some commenters suggested that jealousy, personal disputes or prejudice may have contributed to the attack, while others claimed he had been unfairly stereotyped because of his appearance or profession.

However, none of these claims has been confirmed by the police or any official investigation. Authorities have only stated that the case is being investigated as a fatal assault following an allegation of iPhone theft.

Police have not released evidence confirming the theft allegation, nor have investigators announced any additional motive for the attack.

The investigation is expected to determine what happened before the assault, who participated in it, and whether others should face criminal charges.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers of jungle justice in Nigeria, where allegations are sometimes followed by violence before law enforcement has an opportunity to investigate.

Legal experts and human rights advocates have repeatedly warned that such attacks deny suspects the right to due process and can result in the deaths of innocent people.

Alumni groups linked to the University of Jos, civil society organisations and members of the public have demanded a transparent investigation into Mbaya’s death.

Across social media, many Nigerians have continued to ask difficult questions: Why was he not handed over to the police? Was there evidence supporting the theft allegation? Could the tragedy have been prevented? Will everyone involved be brought to justice?

As investigations continue, Ibrahim Mbaya’s death has become more than the story of a promising young model whose life was cut short. It has also become another painful reminder of the deadly consequences of mob justice and the urgent need for accountability whenever allegations of crime arise.
