The influx of hard drugs and illegal arms and ammunition into the country has been attributed to porous borders and connivance by few security personnel detailed to secure the country’s borders.

Investigation by The Trumpet within the various borders in the South-West region of the country revealed that some security agents pay huge sum to be redeployed from their former beats to the border zones due to what they expect to get aside their normal salaries paid with taxpayers’ money.

Some top security personnel including mobile policemen and Customs Service personnel as well as Immigration officials who spoke to The Trumpet said it is true that there exist bad elements among security personnel across the border areas linking Nigeria but over time the higher authorities have continued to employ various measures to fish out and replace them with diligent officials.

A top Customs officer who also spoke to The Trumpet confirmed that there are bad eggs in the Service who received huge sums from importers of cars and allowed them to go free without paying the normal duties expected to be sent to government purse.

The investigation further revealed that Tramadol and other hard narcotics which have now flooded the country’s market are usually conveyed into the country at midnight and they come in with trailers after a  proper arrangement with the security personnel on duty so the road will be free without security issue.

Then the trailers will be taken to selected warehouses in various cities and locations where the offloading will be done at the night.

The source said the recent breakthroughs of arrests made by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) were recorded through intelligence gathering received by top operatives who will assign their men to trace and burst such warehouses and this has led to many arrests and recovery of hard drugs by the agency under the leadership of Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Rtd).

Aside from the use of trailers to move illegal drugs and arms into the country, it has also been uncovered that those involved in the shoddy deals also use the waterways to bring in their illegal drugs and other dangerous items into the country.

On most occasions, they got arrested by Naval Operatives who aredetermined to do the needful without collecting any bribe.
