The opening of the Dangote Refinery IPO on September 14, 2026, has exposed significant capacity challenges within Nigeria’s fintech sector after some digital investment platforms struggled to cope with a surge in investor traffic.

Key Highlights

  • Dangote Refinery IPO opened on September 14 with 4.1 billion shares.
  • The shares are priced at ₦525 each, putting the offer value at about ₦2.15 trillion.
  • Bamboo and Cowrywise reported disruptions amid unusually high traffic.
  • Bamboo recorded more than 236,000 new accounts in the week before the offer.
  • NGX recorded about ₦1.5 trillion in subscriptions on the first day.
  • The disruptions raised concerns about fintech scalability and stress testing.
  • The IPO remains open until October 13, 2026.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE initial public offering was widely promoted as an opportunity for broad retail participation, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares. However, the unprecedented demand quickly turned the offer into a major test of Nigeria’s digital investment infrastructure.

Bamboo and Cowrywise, two investment platforms approved for the IPO, experienced reported service disruptions as investors attempted to access their accounts and subscribe for shares. Users complained of failed logins, slow loading times, error messages and difficulties completing transactions.

Bamboo, Cowrywise Face Traffic Surge

Bamboo acknowledged the disruption, saying it was experiencing “much higher than expected traffic” that made it difficult for users to log in.

The company said it had prepared for increased demand over the previous two to three months but recorded more than 236,000 new accounts in the week preceding the IPO, exceeding its previous monthly record.

Cowrywise also reported higher-than-usual traffic and said its team was working to restore normal service.

The disruptions frustrated some investors who had funded their accounts specifically to participate in the offer, raising questions about the ability of fintech platforms to handle large volumes of simultaneous transactions.

Dangote Refinery IPO Records Massive Demand

The scale of investor interest was reflected on the Nigerian Exchange, which recorded approximately ₦1.5 trillion in subscriptions on the first day, representing about 70 per cent of the total offer value.

The IPO had been marketed as “the IPO for the people”, with retail investors, including first-time participants, among its target audience.

Fintech platforms have played an important role in expanding access to Nigeria’s capital market by allowing users to invest through mobile applications and simplified digital processes.

However, the Dangote Refinery IPO showed that rapid growth in retail participation must be matched by sufficient server capacity, scalability and reliable transaction infrastructure.

Fintech Infrastructure Faces Fresh Questions

The contrast between the reported fintech disruptions and the relative stability of traditional banking channels also generated debate about the readiness of newer digital platforms for high-volume financial events.

Fintech specialist May Codegidi noted that the IPO appeared to expose differences between established banking infrastructure and some newer digital investment platforms.

The episode has also raised questions about load testing, contingency planning and infrastructure redundancy, particularly for platforms that had spent weeks promoting the IPO to their users.

IPO Highlights Need for Stronger Infrastructure

The disruptions do not diminish the growing role of fintech companies in democratising access to Nigeria’s capital markets.

Digital investment platforms have helped attract younger Nigerians and other previously underserved investors to equity markets by reducing barriers to participation.

However, the Dangote Refinery IPO has demonstrated that accessibility and aggressive user acquisition must be supported by robust technology infrastructure.

As retail participation in Nigeria’s capital market grows, fintech companies may need to strengthen server capacity, redundancy, load testing and disaster-recovery systems to ensure their platforms remain available during periods of extraordinary demand.

The offer remains open until October 13, 2026, providing investors with additional time to subscribe as platforms work to stabilise their systems. Investors can track subscription details on the Nigerian Exchange’s official site.

For Nigeria’s fintech industry, the episode offers a significant lesson: digital investment platforms must ensure that the technology supporting mass-market financial participation is capable of performing when demand reaches its peak.
