Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced state support for Michael Offorkaile, the Abia State-born student who scored 367 in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), ranking among the five highest-performing candidates in the country.

The governor disclosed this in a statement shared on his official X account after receiving the student, his parents and officials of Grundtvig International Secondary School, Oba, Anambra State, at the Government House.
Commending Michael’s outstanding academic achievement, Governor Otti described the result as a testament to discipline, hard work and excellence, stressing that exceptional performance should always be recognised and encouraged.
He noted that the student’s accomplishment reflects the enormous potential of young Nigerians when provided with the right opportunities.
“Yesterday, I received Master Michael Offorkaile, an illustrious son of Abia State, who scored an outstanding 367 in the 2026 JAMB/UTME examinations, placing him among the joint fifth-highest scorers nationwide,” the governor said.

Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to merit-based governance, saying individuals who distinguish themselves through excellence would continue to receive government recognition and support.
“As a government built on meritocracy, we celebrate excellence wherever it is found, and his feat is a shining example of what our youths can achieve,” he added.
To support Michael’s educational aspirations, the governor directed the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Uche, to develop an appropriate assistance package that would help facilitate his academic journey.
He also instructed his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Dodoh Okafor, to work directly with the student’s family to ensure the implementation of the state’s support programme.
According to the governor, the gesture is intended not only to reward Michael’s remarkable performance but also to inspire other students across Abia State and Nigeria to pursue academic excellence.
He expressed confidence that the young scholar would continue to excel in higher education and make meaningful contributions to the state and the country.
“Michael’s recognition is not only to celebrate him but also to inspire other young Abians and Nigerians to strive for excellence, knowing that their hard work will be honoured,” Governor Otti said.
The governor assured the student of the state’s continued support throughout his academic career, emphasising that investing in talented young people remains essential to building a brighter future.
“His journey towards higher education has just begun, and we are confident that he will continue to strive for excellence and bring even greater pride to Abia State and Nigeria.
“As a government, we stand firmly behind him and will provide the necessary support to ensure his success,” he said.
