The Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Okeho (FUNATO), in Oyo State, has released its first batch of admission offers for the 2026/2027 academic session, covering an initial quota of 2,700 candidates. The university has reportedly asked the National Universities Commission (NUC) to approve additional admission slots as it prepares to expand its intake and accommodate more qualified applicants.

Key Highlights

  • FUNATO has released its first batch of admission offers for the 2026/2027 academic session.
  • The university’s initial admission quota covers 2,700 candidates.
  • FUNATO has reportedly requested approval from the NUC to admit more students.
  • A resource verification visit is expected as part of the assessment of its capacity for expansion.
  • Fresh students are expected to resume by late November, according to the report.
  • The Okeho host community previously donated seven shuttle buses to support transportation for students and staff.
  • Infrastructure, staffing, laboratory facilities and student accommodation remain important considerations as the university expands.

FUNATO Seeks Approval for More Admission Slots

FUNATO’s request for a larger admission quota comes after the institution released its first batch of admission offers for the 2026/2027 academic session.

According to the admission update published by AllCBTs, the university has formally written to the NUC to seek permission to admit candidates beyond its initial allocation of 2,700 students.

A resource verification visit is expected to help assess whether the institution has the facilities and personnel required to accommodate a larger student population.

Any increase in the admission quota will depend on the outcome of the regulatory process and the university’s demonstrated capacity to maintain academic standards.

The development may also affect applicants awaiting further admission offers, as additional places would depend on the approval granted by the relevant authorities.

FUNATO Expands as New Federal University

Established by the Federal Government in 2025, FUNATO was created to expand access to higher education, particularly in agriculture, science and technology, with a focus on the Oke-Ogun region of Oyo State.

Professor Olaniyi Jacob Babayemi is the university’s pioneer Vice-Chancellor.

The institution is developing its operations while working with temporary facilities as permanent infrastructure is established. Its growth will require investment in academic staff, lecture theatres, laboratories, administrative buildings and other essential facilities.

The university’s expansion plans therefore raise questions about how quickly new federal institutions can develop the capacity to accommodate growing demand while maintaining teaching and learning standards.

Okeho Community Donates Seven Shuttle Buses

The host community has also contributed to the university’s development.

The Okeho community, under the leadership of Professor Segun Gbadegesin, the Asiwaju of Okeho Land, reportedly donated seven branded shuttle buses to improve transportation for students and staff ahead of the new academic session.

The donation is part of the community’s support for the institution as it develops its facilities and prepares to accommodate more students.

University management has also appealed for additional assistance with lecture theatres, administrative buildings, agricultural equipment and other essential infrastructure.

The support highlights the role host communities can play in helping newly established institutions address immediate operational needs while government funding and permanent facilities are being developed.

Admission Expansion Depends on Infrastructure and Staffing

The request for a larger quota reflects a challenge that can confront newly established universities: balancing demand for admission with the capacity to deliver quality education.

Admission quotas are influenced by factors such as available academic staff, classrooms, laboratories, equipment and other facilities. Universities seeking to increase their intake must demonstrate that they can adequately support the additional students.

For FUNATO, approval to admit more candidates would therefore need to be matched by the resources required to support teaching, practical training and student welfare.

Applicants who have received alternative course offers should also monitor their admission status and any applicable deadlines on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s Central Admissions Processing System (JAMB CAPS).

Candidates should confirm admission instructions and deadlines through official university and JAMB channels, including the FUNATO website.

Delta Universities Highlight Nigeria’s Accommodation Challenge

The challenges facing FUNATO are part of wider concerns about infrastructure and student accommodation across Nigeria’s public universities.

In Delta State, officials have raised concerns over hostel shortages at tertiary institutions and approved hostel construction projects across nine institutions, according to reports on the initiative.

Delta State University, Abraka, has been cited in previous reports as having more than 35,000 students but approximately 2,000 hostel spaces. Such figures illustrate the pressure that growing enrolment can place on existing facilities.

Newer institutions may face similar difficulties as student numbers rise faster than the development of accommodation, lecture halls and other facilities.

Reported federal interventions, including a proposed or announced ₦250 billion allocation for student hostels nationwide in 2026, are intended to address accommodation gaps. However, the impact will depend on project implementation, the delivery of facilities and the number of additional bed spaces created.

Sustainable Growth Key to FUNATO’s Future

FUNATO’s initial allocation of 2,700 students marks an important stage in the development of the university, while its reported request for a larger quota points to demand for additional admission opportunities.

However, expanding access will require more than increasing the number of available places. Recruitment of qualified lecturers, investment in laboratories and agricultural equipment, development of lecture theatres and provision of suitable student accommodation will be essential to support sustainable growth.

The outcome of the NUC’s assessment will help determine whether FUNATO can expand its intake for the current academic session. For prospective students and the Oke-Ogun community, the university’s next phase will depend on how effectively admission growth is matched with infrastructure and academic capacity.
