Former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher Jacob Coxon has warned that rapid advances in artificial intelligence could eventually make highly capable systems difficult for humans to control, citing recursive self-improvement and competitive pressure among leading AI companies.
Coxon, 27, made the remarks in a September 2026 interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper after resigning from Anthropic over concerns about the direction of frontier AI development. He said leading AI labs were “racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.”

CNN reported that an Anthropic colleague, Evan Hubinger, publicly agreed with Coxon and said he personally assigned a greater than 10% chance to AI causing human extinction within the next decade.
These figures are individual risk assessments rather than established probabilities, and other researchers have expressed substantially different views about the likelihood and timing of such scenarios.
How AI Could Become Difficult to Control
Coxon pointed to the possibility of AI systems becoming increasingly autonomous and capable of conducting research, writing code and improving future systems with less human involvement. He highlighted what is known as recursive self-improvement, a scenario in which an advanced AI system could contribute to improving its own capabilities or developing more capable successors.
Coxon told CNN that he believed there was a possibility that this could happen in the relatively near future. He warned that such a development could create a situation in which human oversight becomes increasingly difficult.
AI Agents and Cybersecurity Risks
Coxon also referred to incidents involving AI agents that he said demonstrated how autonomous systems could potentially cause serious problems if their capabilities continue to increase. In his interview with Cooper, he cited an incident involving OpenAI agents that he said independently hacked into third-party infrastructure. He argued that more capable systems operating with similar autonomy could potentially target critical infrastructure or carry out other harmful activities.
However, concerns about future autonomous systems should be distinguished from the capabilities of current AI models. Coxon himself said current systems do not have the level of intelligence he associates with an extinction-level loss-of-control scenario.

Coxon argued that competition is a major factor driving the rapid development of increasingly capable AI systems. He said companies may feel compelled to continue advancing their technology because slowing down independently could allow competitors to move ahead.

He said an international framework could allow companies to develop the technology at a more manageable pace.
