Medical doctors under the Association of Resident Doctors, ARD at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owo, Ondo State have begun a two-week warning strike.
The doctors after their association’s general meeting held in Owo, headquarters of Owo Local Government Area of the state said they began the strike due to a shortage of personnel.
Speaking, the President of the ARD, FMC Owo branch, Dr Olaopa Olutobi Gideon said the doctors were working under stressful conditions, hence the strike was unavoidable
He said only 80 resident doctors and health officers were employed by the hospital and since 2018 there had not been any recruitment.
“No fewer than 300 doctors and house officers that work at the hospital have left,” he added.

He stressed that the employment of additional 200 doctors and health officers will solve the hospital problem, adding that the doctors are not being paid for extra work.
The doctors further complained about the absence of housing for their colleagues employed at the Akure hospital annexe as well as the low quality of the hospital meals.
The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Olufunsho Ijanus confirmed the industrial action, stating that the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Dr Liasu Adeagbo had met with the ARD leadership immediately after he arrived from Abuja.
He said the hospital’s management had been keeping an eye on development, adding the recruiting of extra staff was delayed due to some reasons.
He said the management would soon find a solution.
