FIRS appeals against VAT ruling in favour of Rivers

The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt will on Monday, May 9, 2022 resume hearing on the appeal filled by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) against the Rivers State government over the collection of Value Added Tax (VAT) and Personal Income Tax (PIT).

Counsel to the Rivers State government in the case disclosed this at the weekend adding that parties to the suit have been asked to submit written applications ahead of the sitting.

The issue of VAT collection had generated litigations between FIRS and some state governments. It would be recalled that Rivers and Lagos State governments had enacted laws and canvassed decentralization of collection, while some states, especially in the North favored centralized collection.
