Manchester United secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Sunday as captain Bruno Fernandes equalled the Premier League assist record in a thrilling encounter.

The Portuguese midfielder registered his 20th league assist of the season when his cross was converted by Bryan Mbeumo in the 76th minute, matching the long-standing record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

Key Highlights:

  • Manchester United defeated Nottingham Forest 3-2 in a thrilling Premier League match at Old Trafford.
  • Bruno Fernandes recorded his 20th league assist of the season, equalling the Premier League assist record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
  • Goals from Luke Shaw, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo secured the win for United.
  • Nottingham Forest fought back through goals from Morato and Morgan Gibbs-White but could not find an equaliser.
  • Veteran midfielder Casemiro received a standing ovation during what may have been his final appearance at Old Trafford.

The win also confirmed third place in the Premier League table for Manchester United under interim manager Michael Carrick, who is yet to be officially confirmed as the club’s permanent coach.

United took an early lead through Luke Shaw, who scored in the fifth minute with only his fifth goal for the club in all competitions.

The home side dominated large spells of the opening half but failed to extend their advantage before the break.

Forest responded strongly after halftime and equalised in the 53rd minute when defender Morato headed home from a cross delivered by Elliot Anderson.

Just two minutes later, controversy erupted after Mbeumo appeared to control the ball with his arm in the build-up to United’s second goal.

Despite a lengthy VAR review and loud protests from supporters, referee Michael Salisbury allowed the goal to stand after concluding the ball had deflected off the forward’s hip before falling kindly to Matheus Cunha, who fired home.

Fernandes eventually produced the historic assist in the 76th minute as Mbeumo made it 3-1, sparking celebrations among United players and fans alike.

Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White pulled one back late on with a composed finish, but the visitors were unable to find an equaliser.

Another emotional moment came when veteran midfielder Casemiro received a standing ovation during what is believed to be his final appearance at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian looked visibly emotional as he slowly walked off the pitch after being substituted late in the game.

Meanwhile, Forest midfielder Anderson further strengthened his growing reputation with an impressive display.

Reports suggest Manchester United are keen on signing the England international this summer as a possible replacement for Casemiro, although Forest are expected to demand a huge transfer fee.

Manchester United will conclude their Premier League campaign away to Brighton next weekend, while Nottingham Forest host Bournemouth at the City Ground.
