The equipment, officially handed over by UPU Ohio President, Olorogun Dr Mrs. Louisa Oyoyo Ukochovwera, PhD, included a pediatric incubator, electrocardiogram (ECG) machine, autoclave sterilizer, wheelchairs, stretchers, a baby cot and an adult weighing scale, among other medical items requested by the hospital.
Speaking at the ceremony, Olorogun Dr Felix O. Okpe, PhD, a founding leader of UPU Ohio who facilitated the intervention, said the initiative reflected the union’s commitment to improving healthcare, human capital development and supporting vulnerable groups across Urhoboland.
He disclosed that UPU Ohio had budgeted over ₦100 million for its healthcare mission and other charitable programmes, urging the hospital management to make judicious use of the donated equipment.
Providing details of the donation, Dr Ovie Fred Okotie explained that the equipment supplied was based entirely on the hospital’s request, noting that the pediatric incubator would help save premature babies, the ECG machine would aid the diagnosis of heart conditions, while the autoclave sterilizer would improve infection control by ensuring surgical instruments are properly sterilized.
He added that Isiokolo’s request stood out among the eight cities benefiting from the UPU Ohio medical outreach because of the specialised nature of the equipment required.
Commending the gesture, Hon. Ogedegbe said the donors deserved special recognition for responding to the hospital’s specific needs rather than making arbitrary donations. He noted that having provided medical equipment to health facilities across the council himself, he understood the huge financial commitment involved.
The council chairman praised the diaspora body for remembering its homeland and urged the hospital management to protect, properly maintain and secure the equipment to encourage future interventions.
Receiving the items on behalf of the hospital, Hospital Administrator, Eghworo Vigilant Ogheneyore, thanked UPU Ohio for fulfilling the hospital’s request, assuring the donors that the equipment would be properly utilised for improved patient care.
