President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has signed into law the bill establishing the Federal Medical Centre, Oleh, Delta State, marking a major milestone for healthcare delivery in Delta South Senatorial District.

The assent, confirmed by the Presidency, converts the bill into an Act of the National Assembly, clearing the way for the upgrade and federal funding of the medical facility in Isoko South LGA. The centre is expected to serve patients across Isoko North, Isoko South, and neighboring communities in Delta and Bayelsa states.

A Long-Sought Upgrade

Stakeholders in Delta South have for years advocated for the conversion of the existing Oleh General Hospital into a Federal Medical Centre. Proponents argued that a federal facility would expand specialist care, reduce medical tourism, and ease pressure on tertiary hospitals in Warri and Asaba.

With the President’s assent, the Federal Medical Centre, Oleh, joins other federal health institutions mandated to provide advanced medical services, training for health workers, and research support.

Tribute to Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas

The bill’s passage has drawn commendations for the senator representing Delta South, Most Distinguished Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas. Residents and political leaders credit him with driving the legislation through the National Assembly.

“Thank you Most Distinguished Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas for this outstanding achievement. You have once again proven capacity,” was the sentiment shared widely by constituents following the news. Supporters say the lawmaker’s consistency on healthcare and infrastructure projects helped secure federal attention for Oleh.

What It Means for Delta South

Health officials expect the new status to bring:
– Increased federal budget allocation for equipment, staffing, and infrastructure upgrades
– Specialist departments such as surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, and diagnostics
– Job creation for medical personnel, technicians, and support staff
– Relief for patients who previously traveled long distances for tertiary care

Community leaders described the development as a win for Delta South, noting that improved healthcare access directly impacts livelihoods and productivity.

Next Steps

With the law now in effect, attention shifts to implementation. The Federal Ministry of Health, in conjunction with the hospital management and Delta State Government, is expected to outline timelines for upgrading facilities, recruiting personnel, and activating federal funding channels.

As celebrations continue across Isoko land, many residents say the Federal Medical Centre, Oleh, represents more than a hospital upgrade — it’s a statement of federal presence and a boost of confidence for Delta South.
