A 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, has been arrested in Enugu State for allegedly killing his girlfriend, identified by police as Chinyere, following an argument over allegations about who infected the other with HIV. The Enugu State Police Command said the woman’s remains were allegedly concealed inside the toilet of the suspect’s apartment at Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu.

Police Arrest Suspect Over Enugu Girlfriend’s Death
The Enugu State Police Command said Emmanuel was arrested by operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division on September 21 at about 6:30 p.m., following information that he had allegedly murdered his girlfriend.
According to police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect was initially rescued from an angry mob before being taken into police custody.
Police preliminary investigations indicated that the alleged killing occurred two days earlier, on September 19.
Police Say Victim Was Hit With Pestle
According to the police account, the incident followed an argument between Emmanuel and Chinyere over allegations concerning who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV.
During preliminary interrogation, police said Emmanuel confessed to striking the woman on the head with a pestle, which allegedly resulted in her death.
The claim remains part of the ongoing investigation and has not been established by a court.
Body Allegedly Hidden Inside Apartment Toilet
Following the alleged killing, police said Emmanuel wrapped Chinyere’s remains in nylon and locked them inside the toilet of his apartment.
The remains were reportedly discovered after an offensive odour from the apartment attracted neighbours.
According to the police, the neighbours forced open the door and apprehended the suspect before the arrival of law enforcement officers.
Victim Identified Only as Chinyere
The police identified the deceased only as Chinyere.
Her surname, age and address had not been established at the time of the police statement, while efforts were reportedly ongoing to trace and notify her relatives.
This differs from some social media posts that have circulated additional names or details about the victim. Such details have not been established in the police reports reviewed for this story.

Autopsy Ordered as Investigation Continues
The victim’s remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, according to the police.
The autopsy is expected to form part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation into the case.
Police Prepare for Prosecution
The police said investigations would continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Reports quoting the command said the suspect would be arraigned after the conclusion of investigations.
The case has generated public concern because of the reported circumstances of the death and the concealment of the remains inside the suspect’s residence.
While police have reported an alleged confession, Emmanuel remains a suspect unless and until the allegations are established through due legal process.
