The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set to officially commission a newly completed Maternity and Paediatric Complex at the Regional Hospital in Bafatá, Guinea-Bissau, on August 6, 2026, as part of efforts to improve maternal and child healthcare across the sub-region.

According to a statement issued by the regional bloc on Thursday, the project was funded through the ECOWAS Regional Fund for Stabilisation and Development (FRSD) at a cost of $638,538.05, equivalent to approximately ₦1.02 billion.

ECOWAS said the facility is designed to expand access to quality healthcare services for women, newborns and children while supporting the development of stronger, more resilient and inclusive health systems in West Africa.

The Commission explained that the project forms part of a broader $1.8 million Direct Investment Programme currently being implemented in Guinea-Bissau to improve access to essential public services and enhance the well-being of vulnerable populations.

It added that the initiative was delivered with financial support from the Government of Germany in collaboration with the Government of Guinea-Bissau and other development partners, highlighting the importance of regional and international partnerships in addressing healthcare challenges.

Once operational, the new complex is expected to significantly strengthen the capacity of the Regional Hospital in Bafatá by improving maternal, neonatal and paediatric healthcare services.

ECOWAS expressed confidence that the investment would contribute to reducing preventable maternal and child deaths while improving the overall quality of healthcare delivery in the region.

The Commission noted that the project aligns with its broader objective of advancing sustainable development, promoting social inclusion and strengthening regional stability through strategic investments in critical sectors such as healthcare, education and infrastructure.

The official handover ceremony is expected to be attended by representatives of ECOWAS, the Government of Guinea-Bissau, the German Government, development partners and other stakeholders, who will use the occasion to reaffirm their commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and expanding access to quality medical services across West Africa.
