Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has been elected the new chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Faye emerged as the new leader of the regional bloc during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Sunday.

He takes over from Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, who completed his one-year tenure as chairman.

The Senegalese leader assumes office at a crucial time for the 15-member regional organisation, which is grappling with terrorism, political instability, democratic setbacks and efforts to rebuild relations with Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger following their withdrawal from ECOWAS.

In his acceptance speech, President Faye pledged to strengthen regional cooperation, accelerate economic integration and promote peace, security and democratic governance across West Africa.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to fostering dialogue among member states and advancing initiatives aimed at addressing the region’s security and development challenges.

At 46, Faye becomes one of the youngest leaders to chair ECOWAS.

His emergence is widely seen as an opportunity to inject fresh momentum into ongoing reforms designed to strengthen the regional bloc, improve institutional credibility and enhance collective responses to transnational security threats.

His election places Senegal at the forefront of regional diplomacy as ECOWAS seeks to reinforce unity, deepen economic cooperation and tackle the complex political and security issues facing West Africa.
