Development partners pledge to support vulnerable Nigerians —Ministry

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has disclosed that development partners are ready to support vulnerable households across Nigeria, through strengthened social intervention programmes aimed at improving access to healthcare, education, and better living conditions.

This was contained in a press statement released on Saturday by the ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Janet Noah, following a meeting between the ministry and a World Bank delegation held on May 22, 2026, in Abuja.

  • During a meeting with a World Bank delegation in Abuja, Minister Bernard Doro described the National Social Registry as a critical tool for identifying poor and vulnerable households.
  • The minister said the registry helps ensure that social intervention programmes are evidence-based, properly targeted, and effective in reaching those most in need.
  • He reaffirmed the commitment of Bola Tinubu’s administration to reducing poverty through sustained social investment and humanitarian initiatives.
  • The World Bank delegation, led by Roberts Chase, pledged continued support for Nigeria’s social programmes and noted that the country has the largest social registry in Africa.

Speaking during the engagement, the Minister, Bernard Doro, described the National Social Registry as more than just a database, stressing that it serves as a strategic national tool for identifying poor and vulnerable households across the country.

According to him, the registry ensures that social intervention programmes are evidence-based, well-targeted, and impactful in improving the lives of beneficiaries.

He further noted that President Bola Tinubu remains committed to lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty through sustained social investment and humanitarian programmes.

The minister also expressed optimism that more development partners would continue to collaborate with the federal government to strengthen efforts aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable citizens nationwide.

Meanwhile, the World Bank delegation led by Roberts Chase, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s social intervention initiatives, noting that Nigeria currently maintains the largest social registry in Africa.
