Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is conscious and receiving further medical evaluation after collapsing during his country’s international friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday.
The match, played in Odense, was halted in the 65th minute after the 34-year-old suddenly fell to the ground, prompting immediate concern from teammates, opponents and medical personnel.
Key Highlights:
The game was later abandoned as medics attended to Eriksen on the pitch before he was taken away for further examination.
According to Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen, the former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur star briefly lost consciousness but quickly regained awareness.
“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself,” Boesen said after the incident.
“As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.”

The doctor added that Eriksen would undergo additional tests at a hospital to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
“He will now undergo further examinations to determine what caused the incident,” Boesen stated.
The frightening scene revived memories of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening match against Finland at the delayed Euro 2020 Championship in June 2021.
That incident shocked the football world as medical personnel performed life-saving treatment on the pitch before Eriksen was taken to hospital.
Following his recovery, the Danish playmaker was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), a device designed to monitor heart rhythm and deliver corrective treatment when necessary.
The ICD enabled Eriksen to resume his professional career in 2022, first with Brentford before moving to Manchester United, where he spent three seasons. He later joined German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg ahead of the 2025–26 campaign and made 34 appearances during the season.
Sunday’s match marked Eriksen’s 151st appearance for Denmark.
Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg described the emotional moments that followed the collapse and praised the swift response of medical staff.
“There was a throw-in and then I turned around and saw Christian going down. We all know a little about how he reacts and what that can mean,” Højbjerg said.
“Everyone reacted very quickly and with great respect. I can only praise the courage of those who took care of Christian on the field.”
As medics worked on Eriksen, players from both Denmark and Ukraine formed a protective circle around him, similar to the scenes witnessed during his collapse at Euro 2020.
After the midfielder was taken from the pitch, both teams gathered in a huddle and later applauded supporters inside the stadium before officials confirmed the match would not continue.
Denmark coach Brian Riemer said the welfare of the player remained the team’s primary concern.
“The most important thing is that Christian is doing well, and he is,” Riemer said.
“He has left the field and has sent his regards to the players. Now it’s about us standing together and ensuring everyone has support.”
The Danish Football Association said it remains in constant contact with Eriksen and the medical team overseeing his treatment.
Football fans, players and clubs across Europe have since sent messages of support to the veteran midfielder, whose remarkable return from a near-fatal cardiac arrest has made him one of the sport’s most inspiring figures.
Further updates on Eriksen’s condition are expected following the completion of medical examinations.
