The Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to address critical infrastructure and security issues plaguing the state. The appeal was made during the First Rotational Congress of the NUJ, held on August 21, 2024, at the Press Hall, Governor’s Office Annex, Warri.

The congress, presided over by State NUJ Chairman Comrade Churchill Oyowe, acknowledged the commendable progress on the three flyover projects in Warri and Effurun. The use of Julius Berger as the contractor was particularly praised. However, the congress stressed the need for consistent funding to ensure these essential projects are completed on time. Additionally, concerns were raised about the deteriorating condition of the Tuomor to Ojobo road in Burutu Local Government Area, urging the state government to expedite repairs.

NUJ also noted that with a growing hunger in Delta State, there is urgent need for increased agricultural investment. They called on the state government to bolster its policies and programs aimed at food security.

Simultaneously, the rising security challenges—especially kidnapping, rape, and herders’ invasion of farmlands—were flagged as pressing issues that require immediate government intervention.

The NUJ commended the state government for successfully hosting the National Youth Games at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba. They also urged the swift completion of the Warri Township Stadium once drainage projects in the area are finalized. The congress further emphasized the need to upgrade the state-owned radio and television stations in Asaba and Warri to meet high digital broadcasting standards, ensuring better media coverage and public information.

The congress called for the swift implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for workers in the state, urging the government to prioritize the welfare of its workforce. In a bid to enhance media relations, the NUJ also appealed to Governor Oborevwori and other elected officials to employ certified and registered NUJ members as media aides, ensuring professional and credible media engagement.

The congress concluded with a strong push for Governor Oborevwori to prioritize these critical reforms, which are seen as vital to Delta State’s development. The resolutions reflect the collective voice of the NUJ and their commitment to driving progress in the region.
