Tension gripped residents of Ikom Local Government Area in Cross River State following cult-related clashes that claimed lives in the state, prompting a swift response from the Executive Chairman of the LGA, Hon. Pst. (Mrs) Mercy Nsor, who has called for calm and urgent peace building.
The clashes, which reportedly erupted in the Akparabong community, triggered panic and mourning as families grapple with the tragic loss of loved ones. In response, Chairman Nsor visited the bereaved families to offer condolences and reaffirm the council’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in the area.
In a bid to halt further violence and prevent reprisals, the Chairman also met with the Paramount Ruler of Ikom, His Royal Highness Minen Takon Atangba, and other key stakeholders to initiate conflict resolution and peace talks. She decried the senseless loss of lives and urged aggrieved parties to sheath their swords and prioritize the unity and development of the community.
Speaking during her visit, Nsor conveyed the displeasure of the state governor, His Excellency, Apostle Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, who she said is deeply concerned about the situation in Akparabong. “War and crises do not bring development. They only destroy lives and hold communities back. If these clashes continue, the full weight of the law will be brought down on anyone found fomenting trouble,” she warned.

The council boss emphasized the need for collective vigilance, urging community members to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies in order to curb further bloodshed. She also called on youths to embrace peace and channel their energy into productive ventures that will build, not destroy, the future of Ikom.
On his part, HRH Minen Takon Atangba commended the Chairman for her proactive steps and show of leadership. He assured that traditional authorities would intensify efforts to engage with all relevant groups to ensure lasting peace.
The violence in Ikom adds to the growing concerns over cult-related activities across several local governments in Cross River State. As authorities intensify interventions, the public is hopeful that swift action will end the cycle of violence and pave the way for a safer, more united community.
